“We work jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need.” That quote hits hard. And for a long time, that was me—waking up every Monday dreading the job I had convinced myself I needed to keep for the sake of my family. I wasn’t happy, but I kept telling myself, “This is what men do. This is sacrifice.”
But deep down, I knew I was waiting. Waiting for someone to save me, waiting for the perfect moment, waiting for permission. What I didn’t realize was that I was really lacking self discipline—the kind of discipline that forces honest reflection and uncomfortable action.
That’s when I created what I now call the Comfort Assessment. I originally developed it for myself in a lonely hotel room in 2014. Since then, I’ve used it with thousands of entrepreneurs who are feeling stuck, uncertain, or just burnt out—and it has helped them pinpoint exactly where they’ve lost momentum in life.
How the Comfort Assessment Works
The Comfort Assessment helps you evaluate whether you’re content or complacent in key areas of your life. There’s a big difference between the two—and self discipline is the bridge.
We all have areas that need attention:
- Finances
- Spiritual life
- Health and fitness
- Relationships
- Business
- Personal life
Content vs. Complacent
- Content: You’re satisfied with how things are, even if you’re still working toward improvement. You’re intentional.
- Complacent: You’ve stopped trying. You’re coasting. You’re ignoring areas that need you to show up. And most importantly—you know it.
I journaled through each of those areas and asked: Am I content or complacent here? And man, the number of times I had to write “complacent” was a gut check. That’s when self discipline really has to kick in—because it’s not enough to recognize it. You have to do something about it.
The Projection Phase: Future-Casting with Discipline
Once you label each area as content or complacent, the next step is where the magic happens. You’re going to project two outcomes for each area:
- What happens if I do nothing?
Where will this area of my life be in 1 year? 5 years? 10 years? - What happens if I pay daily attention for a decade?
What if I brought intentionality and self discipline to this every single day?
When I walked through this with my health, my business, my relationships—it became painfully obvious that doing nothing would take me to places I did NOT want to go. But consistent, focused action? That changed everything.
The Night That Changed Everything
That night in the hotel room, I had to face the truth: I was playing small. I was living scared. And I was using the excuse of being a “provider” as a shield against the real issue—lack of self discipline.
So I quit my job.
I didn’t have a safety net. Just a side hustle that barely paid the bills. My first week full-time as an entrepreneur? I made $200. My wife looked at me like, “So… what’s the plan here?”
The plan? Discipline. Relentless, uncomfortable, grind-it-out discipline.
I started waking up early. I journaled every single day. I studied, took courses, hired mentors, built systems, tracked everything. I poured energy into every area that once said “complacent” and replaced it with daily, disciplined action.
Because that’s what it takes.
Why This Still Matters Today
Complacency sneaks in quietly. You don’t notice it until it’s loud. And while motivation will waver, self discipline never goes out of style.
This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being honest. You can’t improve what you won’t admit needs work.
So here’s the challenge:
- Do your own comfort assessment.
- Be brutally honest.
- Commit to one area where you will show up daily with discipline.
You don’t need to fix everything today. But you do need to stop waiting. No one’s coming to save you. You save yourself—with self discipline and consistent action.
Let’s get better together.
Try harder. Live bigger.
