204: I Never Cared About Branding—Now I’m Building a Brand That Actually Matters

brandon · April 29, 2025

Most people think your personal brand starts with picking hex colors or designing the perfect logo. Let me be blunt—it doesn’t. If you can’t clearly communicate what you do, what you stand for, or why people should care, your brand isn’t working.

Over the last few months, I’ve been diving deep into my own rebrand—moving from Better Human Business to simply Better. And what I’ve realized is this: your personal brand is built from the inside out. It’s about clarity, not aesthetics.

If you’re struggling with content, marketing, or even basic messaging, it’s likely because your personal brand hasn’t been fully defined. So today, I want to walk you through what I call the Brand Builder Template—a tool I now keep open every time I create content. This single framework changed everything for me.

Why Clarity Beats Design Every Time

Let me start by saying I didn’t create this template myself. It was shared with me, and after tweaking it for my own business, I knew I had to pay it forward. The structure it gave me made my content sharper, my messaging tighter, and my audience more connected.

If you’ve ever sat down to write and felt like you had nothing to say—or worse, had no idea why you’re saying it—this is your starting point.

Your personal brand should serve as a compass for everything you create. It’s how your message cuts through the noise. It’s how your audience knows what you stand for.

Inside My Personal Brand Guide

Here’s what I include in my personal brand template:

1. Positioning Statement

Mine reads:

Better is a systems-first brand that helps entrepreneurs grow profitable newsletters, build real businesses, and get their time back.

It’s simple and strategic. Yours should clearly define who you help, how you help them, and what sets you apart.

2. What We Do

This goes deeper than products or services. For me:

We equip entrepreneurs with tools and community to build something that lasts. Through systems, operations, and frameworks, we help ensure they have a business—not just a job.

This gives structure to your personal brand voice. It keeps your messaging consistent across everything you put out.

3. Your Brand Manifesto

I keep mine tight:

  • Mission: Things don’t get easier. You get better. We help.
  • Core Phrase: Proven systems to grow profitable newsletters.
  • Mantra: Try harder. Live bigger.
  • Identity: Hoodie and headphones.

Yep—Hoodie and headphones is how I represent the lifestyle of the entrepreneur I’m speaking to. Not flashy. Not fake. Just building something real while living on your own terms.

This is what personal branding really means. It’s about building an identity your audience can believe in—one that mirrors who they want to become.

4. Core Messages

I’ve identified the three messages I repeat most often:

  • You don’t need a massive audience. Just an amazing newsletter.
  • You don’t rise to the moment. You fall to your systems.
  • The only way to live a bigger life is through better ops.

If you’re creating a personal brand and you’re not repeating your messages often—you’re not branding. You’re just broadcasting.

5. The Rest of the Template

Here’s what else I include in my personal brand guide:

  • Brand values (mine are effort, details, and quality)
  • Laws of the brand
  • Tone and voice
  • Brand culture
  • Offer clarity
  • Audience transformation (before vs. after working with us)

And yes, I eventually get to fonts and colors—but not until the very end. If you start there, you’ve already lost.

The Power of Personal Brand Clarity

Before I built this guide, I had done well with content. I had businesses. I was making money. But I wasn’t clear. And when you’re unclear, you confuse your audience. That leads to hesitation, poor conversions, and a lot of frustration.

After I documented my brand in full, everything changed:

  • My content ideas multiplied.
  • My newsletter strategy got sharper.
  • I could communicate in a more compelling, confident way.

And the best part? My audience finally understood me—and what I could help them do.
