parresia

the Greek word for the kind of boldness God actually wants from us. why shame is the wrong response, and what it looks like to speak freely.

parresia

what does it mean to be a man of God?

I’ve met a few in my life.

a man of God is not necessarily a religious man. a man of God is a disciple. an apprentice.

he knows the scripture, and he can quote it.

he has an unshakable faith in the face of any adversity.

he can provide guidance to others, but he doesn’t push himself into their lives.

he has no fear or shame. he talks openly about his faith with others.

there is no reason to fear talking about God. there is no reason to fear talking to God about anything.

in Hebrews 4:15 to 16, it says to come to him “boldly.” the Greek word meaning boldly is parresia.

parresia’s original meaning is freedom of speech. the ability to speak without holding back. to speak when the truth is uncomfortable.

parresia was a bold act. like a private speaking openly to a 4-star general.

God already knows everything. when we feel shame or guilt and don’t want to talk to God, you have to ask where that feeling comes from.

is that shame and guilt coming from God? no. it’s either an earthly and human feeling, or it’s actual spiritual warfare happening.

either way, God already knows. you can come to him with anything.

“God, I messed up again.”

“God, I have doubts.”

speak boldly and openly with God. there is no reason to hold back.

that is what God wants from us. it’s how you build a relationship with him.

Romans 8:1 says, “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”

God knows we are not perfect. there is no condemnation. but you must pursue him daily.

and speak freely. not because we are worthy, or equals. but because Jesus is worthy. and he saved us.
