boring. brutal. better.

life in an RV...3 kids, 2 adults, 2 dogs.

if you caught my newsletter from two weeks ago...

hey Builder,

what are you prepared for?

if you caught my newsletter from two weeks ago…
you know I sold my house and moved my entire family into an RV.
we went from 6,500 sq.ft to maybe 300 sq.ft.
(no, the biz didn’t fail…we are remodeling a new house 😂)

here’s what I have found cool so far…

1.) household chores now take 3.5 minutes.
2.) I sleep the best I ever have in this thing.
3.) my kids haven’t cared one bit…

I want to focus on #3 for a second.

the last thing I want is a spoiled trust-fund kid.
my kids know effort. they know discomfort.

but do they really know?

Emily and I are always trying to balance giving our kids the best life possible…
without spoiling them and making them feel entitled.

now, they are crammed in the back of an RV with 3 bunks and an AC that’s hanging on for
dear life in the Texas summer…and I haven’t heard one complaint.

selfishly, this is the ‘test’ I’ve always wanted.

if you follow stoicism, you’ve heard of ‘preparatio malorum’ (preparing for the worst).

Seneca wrote, “Set aside now and then a number of days during which you shall be
content with the scantiest and cheapest fare, with coarse and rough dress, saying to
yourself the while: ‘Is this the condition that I feared?’”

Seneca, being one of the wealthiest men in Rome, practiced this intentionally despite his
wealth. his point: if you choose hardship (even occasionally), you stop fearing it.

as an entrepreneur, I’ve always feared failure.
you know, not being able to provide enough for my family.
not giving them the life I want…

so what’s the worst case if I swing big in business and miss?
I have to live in an RV?
is this the condition that I feared?
because it’s not a big deal.

don’t get me wrong…
I am not looking for long-term RV life 😂.
but I know its something this family can handle.
no sweat.

the life my family wants is time together.
a game of chess…
one more round of UNO…
not a house…
not a car…
not even a trip…

how much more life could you live if you truly had no fear?

spend a few minutes on that question today.
it may have more impact than you think.

then, put yourself in the position you most fear.
you’ll realize it’s not all that bad.

try harder,

JM
