Building the Business:
Millionaires Drive Crappy Cars š
Whatās your dream car? A Ferrari? Lamborghini?
Well mine was a 1980s, 75 HP, Volkswagen Cabriolet.
So, letās discuss why the car I bought in the Panera parking lot for $2K is my dream carā¦
They laughedā¦
In the military, thereās something known as the āCaptainās Car.ā Getting to captain is a decent pay raise, so most captains get a new car. Make sense?
Well a 1980s something 75 HP Volkswagen Cabriolet was my āCaptainās Car,ā called the āGULF CART.ā Stationed in the Florida Gulf at the time, it made perfect sense. I picked it up for less than $2K in a Panera parking lot. It was a stick shift, leaked when it rained, and sometimes it wouldnāt work.
Everyone who worked FOR me had a nicer car and laughed when I rolled into work.
I didnāt care. I had a goal.
I knew if I were going to leave the military and be an entrepreneur, I would need ZERO debt to take the risk.
Emily and I have, and continue, to put in a lot of work to live the life we want. Simple, not easy.
This is not my DREAM CAR, but it was the car that helped me get to the dream: THE-DREAM Car.
And Iām not the only one touting this messageā¦
Dave Ramsey has been saying it for 30 years, Alex Hormozi started the āMozimobileā movement, and even Layne Norton talks about his beater.
Process ā outcome
Donāt confuse the outcome with the process.
If you want a desired outcome, the process can be messy and embarrassing and leak when it rains.
If youāre willing to make the necessary sacrifices today, youāll eventually get to your desired tomorrow.
Itās not about the car you drive, but the drive within you. The āGULF CARTā wasnāt my dream car, but it was the vehicle to my dreams.
Takeaways:
- Do impressive things - like build a business.
- Avoid impressing people with something you canāt afford.
- Make the sacrifices needed to live the life you want!
Building the Human:
Made-up Work for Humans āļø
Do you know why your great-grandpa wasnāt looking to hit a training session after work? Because he did āreal work.ā
But this āreal workā is rapidly disintegratingā¦
Iām not shaming youā¦
Slow your role, Iām not here to tell you how the world āshould be.ā I donāt care if you mow your own grass or know the difference between a flat or phillips head screwdriver.
In fact, humans doing less real work is good for business. See below.
Each ā1ā represents $1,000,000, so that tops out at $100 billionā¦
The need for made-up work is here to stay.

Why This Works? Itās fun.
Letās not complicate it.
Grunt work, works.
Itās about specific work intervals and rest intervals. Itās about doing just enough work to keep your heart rate up, but not enough to exhaust you. Itās about sustainable and repeatable work that you can do for hours.
Itās that simple. And itās more fun than staring at a wall on a treadmill.
Takeaways:
- Make fitness fun or at least interesting
- Think of it as boring grunt work and less about abs or Garmin metricsā¦
Try Harder: Weekly Reminder
Avoid the Hamster Wheel š¹
If youāre subscribed to a newsletter called āTRY HARDERā I have no doubt you are comfortable with hard work.
Just make sure you donāt prioritize effort over results.
Effort entitles you to nothing.
Remember, itās crucial to connect all your present actions to your future goals. This is the key to escaping the hamster wheel and achieving meaningful results.
Effort without a vision, effort without direction, and effort without assessment is nothing more than a hamster wheel.
Plan better.
Try harder,
JM
