Summary

wealth starts in the mouth, not the bank account. listen to how people talk about money. it tells you exactly where they’re stuck.

  1. people with scarcity mindset complain. constantly. the rent went up. the gas is so expensive. taxes. the kids’ tuition. it’s a running soundtrack and it shapes every decision they make.

  2. people with abundance mindset don’t. not because they have more money. because they refuse to give energy to the complaint. they ask “how do I make more?” instead of “why is everything so expensive?”

  3. you can rewire this. start with one rule: don’t complain about money out loud, anywhere, for 30 days. you will catch yourself constantly. that’s the point. catching it is the work.

having money and being wealthy are different things. you can have money and stay scarce. you can be broke and act wealthy. eventually the mindset pulls the bank account in the same direction. fix the mouth, the rest follows. try harder.

For those of you who have, I really do appreciate you.

- observations from personal experiences with different financial groups

All right, now let’s dive into the first step to becoming wealthy. I’m not going to be talking about setting up the proper bank account or legal entities or structures or setting up a living trust or anything like that. That’s not what I’m talking about. If you want to be wealthy, the first step is in your mind.

It’s in your speech. It’s how you communicate. I can tell almost immediately or within the first few minutes of speaking to someone if they have money or they don’t have money. It’s a matter of how they communicate with you about things. And this is something I’ve realized over a very long period of time, having incredibly wealthy mentors and also being around people who have next to no money.

- the commonality of complaining about money and its impact

And here’s what I know. The people who do not have money talk about money a lot. And when I say talk about, I typically mean complain about money quite a bit. And I get it. It’s easy, right? If you’re wealthy and you have a ton of money, you don’t need to talk about money because all your needs, financial needs are taken care of.

So there’s no need to talk about them. That’s one argument. And then the people who don’t have as much money are complaining, saying, talking about them because they don’t have money and they’re, I don’t know, just they want to talk about it to somebody. But here’s the deal. I have been, I’m a father of three and I have been around a lot of different sports practices and games.

- personal shift from a scarcity to an abundance mindset

And the reason I say that is because when I’m at these practices and games, I also get to associate with a lot of different parents. I get to talk with different parents and all these different, different practices and multiple different sports. So it’s like on any given week I can associate with like 30 different sets of parents across multiple kids.

And so I’m just, I get to interact with a lot of people who are outside of my sphere of business or closer friends. And you can very quickly tell if someone wants to talk about money, they’ll, they’ll talk about, complain about something somehow. They will complain about gas prices. They’ll complain about grocery prices, inflation.

- how the language we use can influence our financial reality

They’ll complain about how much their son’s cleats cost and how ridiculous that is. And I believe we’ve made this commonplace that we can all sit around and complain about money together. It’s it’s it’s almost like talking about the weather. It’s a very common thing. Right. Oh, we’re getting a lot of rain lately.

And it’s also common for people to complain about money. You can’t sit around and talk about good things about money. You can really only sit around with other adults and complain about money. And I don’t reciprocate in these conversations when they happen. The conversation will quickly move on because I’m not going to sit around and talk about my kids’ soccer registration fees or their soccer cleat cost or anything like that.

- examples of how to shift discussions and thoughts on money

I am not going to, I’m not going to have that conversation back with you. And the reason I’m not going to is not because I’m sitting on mountains of cash and I don’t care about those things and I don’t want to associate with you. Has nothing to do with that. It has to do with the fact that I had an incredible scarcity, an incredibly scarce mindset around money for a long time.

And it took a long time for me to beat that out of my brain. And now I have beat it out of my brain. It’s not coming back. I’m not going to talk to you about how much things cost and how I want to sit around and complain about it. I don’t complain about money. And this is something I picked up from a mentor when I had no money, when I had a couple hundred dollars sitting in my bank account and that was it.

- the definition of true wealth and how to embody it

If anything happened to my house, to my car, I was screwed and I’d been in those situations, but I still got this from my mentor at that time. There’s no point in complaining about money. So I want you to think about that when you’re in conversations. Are you complaining about money to your parents, your friends, your colleagues, even in small amounts, like just, just look for it.

You will find it in conversations amongst adults. Like it’s just going to happen. But to me, I’m not going back to that scarcity mindset because I think that’s what that breeds. I’m not going to be a part of that. I will not communicate with you that way. And I don’t think that you should communicate about it either because I do think our thoughts and our language become who we are.

- closing thoughts on maintaining a wealthy mindset

And so if you want to have that scarcity complaining mindset around money, then that is who you will be. You will never have enough. Things will always be too expensive. But let’s try something else out. If I’ve already signed, let’s just go back to a sports example. Say I signed my son up for soccer and he had to get new cleats and new cleats are really expensive.

There’s no need for me to go talk to other people about how expensive the cleats are because I could, whatever, I’m in complete control of like what cleats I get him. But either way, let’s say I had to get him the expensive cleats. If I get him the expensive cleats, there’s no reason to complain about it because I already decided that he’s on the team.

I’ve already decided this is what he’s going to do. So even if I have $150 total in my bank account, that’s it, and I have to buy $100 cleats, I’m still not going to complain about that choice because I’ve already made the decision. And so think about that in your life. Why do you need to complain about any of the financial things going on?

You don’t, you absolutely do not have to. If your car is too expensive, groceries are too expensive, your house is too expensive, whatever is too expensive, it doesn’t matter. You don’t need to complain about it. You don’t need to talk about it. You either go find a solution, find something less expensive that you can afford, or you go make more money, which is ultimately what you need to do as an entrepreneur.

So I’m not saying things aren’t too expensive. I’m not saying that it’s easy to afford everything. That’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying it’s a mindset shift. No matter how much money is in your bank account, quit complaining about what has to be spent because those things are not changing. Compensation is always going to be going up.

Things are going to get more expensive, and if you’re not learning how to earn more money and save more money, then you’re just going to get left behind, right? You can’t earn the same amount forever. You have to continually increase your income. That’s part of the game. That’s what we’re doing. But to sit around and complain about it, that’s completely optional.

Whether you can afford something or not is irrelevant. Complaining about it is within your choice. That is something you can choose to do or not do. And then when your friends or family are doing it, do not reciprocate. Do not be a part of that conversation. Do not let yourself go into that scarcity mindset where you’re talking about how expensive everything is.

Don’t worry about the cost. You either have to do it, you either have to spend the money, or you don’t. It’s not normally ambiguous, and if you have decided to spend the money on something, whatever that is, don’t complain about it. Don’t complain about your roof needing to get repaired, or the flat tire on your car.

Shit happens. That’s life. It’s just going to happen. Don’t complain about it. You have that option. You have the option to not complain about it. All right, I’m not going to beat this dead horse any more than I have to, but this is something you need to uproot out of your brain if you want to be wealthy, if you want to have a truly abundant and wealthy mindset, which is not a rich mindset, by the way.

Rich people still complain about things. People can have money, be rich, and still complain about things, but I would consider that person not wealthy because they don’t have the proper mindset to ever be truly wealthy. They just have money. There’s a big difference there, and if you want to be wealthy, you’re going to have to try harder.
