quit alcohol (and 6 other habits holding you back)

the weekend habits that undo your weekday work. seven things to cut, starting with alcohol. self-sabotage is the silent killer of long-term progress.

Summary

the weekend version of you undoes the weekday version of you. that’s the silent loop killing most people’s progress. five good days plus two bad ones equals zero forward motion. seven habits to cut:

  1. alcohol. disrupts sleep, kills optimization, slows recovery. it’s the lever with the biggest pull. start here.
  2. staying up late. tomorrow is bought tonight. burn the candle and tomorrow’s version of you pays.
  3. skipping workouts. the missed workout is rarely the workout. it’s the start of the slide.
  4. putting yourself last. the parent who sacrifices everything is the parent who burns out. you cannot pour from empty.
  5. sleeping in. the morning is leverage. waste it and the rest of the day chases.
  6. thinking you deserve something. entitlement is a productivity killer. nobody owes you the outcome.
  7. pretending you know. the fastest path to growth is admitting you don’t, and asking the people who do.

self-sabotage is the silent killer. watch your dreams turn into years if you don’t cut these.

self-sabotage: watching your dreams turn into years

If you’re sitting there watching your dreams turn into years you need to quit drinking alcohol and while you’re at it I’ll tell you six other things you can quit as well. Here’s the deal as a coach I’ve coached a lot of people in business and also in fitness and there’s nothing and I mean nothing more frustrating than people self-sabotaging their goals when everything went right during the week Monday through Friday they hit their workouts they did everything they were supposed to they ate the right diet everything’s going great then on the weekend they’re like screw it I deserve to party I’m gonna party I’m gonna drink I’m gonna eat whatever and then you go through this cycle of them not achieving their goals and it’s frustrating this happens in business coaching as well things are going well they’re doing the things that they need to do they’re time blocking they’re achieving their tasks but then things get off track and they start to self sabotage by following shiny object syndrome and all of these things that we run in circles and it’s so incredibly frustrating and the reason I hit on alcohol specifically is because it is slowing you down little by little as well as the six other things that I am going to go over so first thing I’m going to go over to quit is alcohol you just need to quit I wish I could have some sort of moderation statement here but for most people moderation doesn’t cut it and you might not be an alcoholic that doesn’t matter just quit drinking altogether because what’s happening is you’re most likely drinking at night and when you drink at night it screws up your sleep and when it screws up your sleep you’re not optimized the next day look you’re an entrepreneur you’re playing a different game you need to be on point each and every single day and if you’re not an entrepreneur if you’re a father or you’re a husband you need to be on point for your family so quit drinking alcohol because it’s not helping you in any way shape or form if you want to be optimal and you want to actually tackle life how you say you want to and you don’t want your dreams to turn into years quit drinking alcohol all right the second thing quit staying up late no more late nights come on this isn’t college anymore you need to get your shit together you need to quit staying up so late you need the sleep going back in line with alcohol alcohol screwing up that sleep and so you’re staying up too late whatever the case is whyever you’re staying up late even if it’s for work you need to quit you need to quit staying up late it is not helping you to walk into a day tired next quit skipping workouts you keep telling yourself for the last three years you’re going to do better you’re going to be different it’s not happening you just need to quit quit skipping workouts do them they’re more important than anything else you will do today i can promise you that so make sure that you’re not skipping workouts quit doing it next quit putting yourself last look if you want to be a martyr for your family for your business or for whoever by all means go do it i’m sure when people are at your funeral will have a good time saying yeah they put everyone else first and that’s the only time anyone will ever say it is when you’re dead and i’m not saying it’s not important as a parent we oftentimes have to put our children above ourselves we have to put their needs first and i get it but you can’t always put yourself last so i didn’t say you always have to put yourself first but you don’t always have to put yourself last you don’t have to take care of everybody on your team and then take care of everybody in your family then take care of everything else that needs to happen in your life then when you have time take care of yourself when you’re putting yourself last you are doing yourself a disservice a horrible disservice you need to start putting yourself higher up in that order so you can actually make progress and become better next quit sleeping in quit being so damn lazy you have things to do i’m not saying that you need to wake up at 4am and chase your goals but what you can’t do is sleep in when other things need to get done if waking up 30 minutes early is too hard for you but that’s also the only thing separating you from you and your goals maybe you need some new goals maybe you shouldn’t be doing this maybe you should chase something different literally 30 minutes earlier in the morning can be a game changer in every direction you could write for 30 minutes you could send messages or emails for 30 minutes you could focus on yourself or get that workout in for 30 minutes waking up 30 minutes earlier than whatever it is right now could be a complete game changer in your life but for some reason people still sleep in like they need that extra 30 minutes you need the sleep you need the seven to eight hours of sleep so go to bed earlier c.2 don’t stay up so damn late wake up on time quit sleeping in you’re not a child all right next quit thinking that you deserve something you don’t deserve anything it’s so funny the people i hear complain most about the entitlement mentality often have it the worst because they think a lot of people who are coming into a new space as an entrepreneur they think that because they achieve something somewhere else like maybe you had a full-time job and you were making a lot of money and so now you step into this world my world and you think that you deserve a certain level of income you don’t deserve anything you haven’t earned anything every single thing that you do in entrepreneurship and in life has to be earned you don’t deserve a damn thing and when you can actually realize that that you don’t deserve anything at any point or any level you’ve you’ve made a 10 million dollar business cool i don’t care you don’t deserve an 11 million dollar business but you can work towards it you can earn it you can do the work that is required but you don’t deserve anything get that out of your head now the last one and the most frustrating amongst these is pretending that you know i talk to people all the time about whether or not they’re getting their workouts in whether or not they’re putting themselves first whether or not they’re sleeping in or drinking alcohol and they tell me they know oh yeah you know i get it you know right you know like a textbook knows you know something but when it comes to experiential you don’t know a damn thing because you’re not doing it so quit pretending you know you might know the logic that’s different but you don’t know how to do it so just go smaller quit pretending like you know what you’re doing when you don’t you need to be more humble and realize who you are and meet yourself at that point okay don’t don’t pretend like you know you shouldn’t drink alcohol and then quit and then you keep drinking alcohol don’t pretend like you know you should quit skipping your workouts but you keep skipping your workouts what are you going to show me with how you know something what are you going to show me quit pretending you know all of these things you don’t know if you knew you would know how to do it so you might know the thing but you don’t know how to do it so quit pretending that knowing is anything knowing how to do something and actually getting it done is everything quit slowing down quit sabotaging yourself try harder
